How to Grow Pineapple From Pineapple Top

How to Grow Pineapple From Pineapple Tops

I have spent this summer in the tropics where i have learnt how to grow pineapple from pineapple tops. We were staying at a place and they had about 40 pineapple plants in the garden in amongst the papaya trees and banana trees and of course they get ripe pretty quickly all within a few weeks of each other. So i made pineapple topping (recipe below) and pineapple vinegar shrubs and we had a years supply, because we had more pineapples than we could eat at that time. Wow what a glorious time that was.

  1. Prepare the Pineapple Top:

    • Snap off the spiky leafy top of a pineapple.
    • Gently pull away the bottom 2-3 cm of spiky leaves to expose the base and a few root nodes.
  2. Place in Water:

    • Fill a glass or jar with enough water to submerge just the exposed base of the pineapple top.
    • Place the pineapple top in the water, ensuring the leaves stay above water.
  3. Provide Light and Warmth:

    • Place the jar in a warm, bright location with indirect sunlight.
  4. Change Water Regularly:

    • Replace the water every 2-3 days to prevent bacteria and promote healthy root growth.
  5. Wait for Roots:

    • Roots should begin to grow in 2-3 weeks. Once they are a few centimeters long, the pineapple top is ready to plant.
  6. Plant in Soil:

    • Transfer the rooted pineapple top to a pot with well-draining soil. Water lightly and keep it in a warm, sunny spot.

In time, you’ll have a thriving pineapple plant! If you save every pineapple top you buy and go through this procedure not only will you have a beautiful garden but you can have free pineapple for the rest of your life. Grow your own and you will be in raptures over the flavor. This is why I grow pineapple from pineapple tops. I keep them in the house as a house plant until they become too big. Then when the temperature are warmer I plant them in the garden. I’m telling you pineapple season is orgasmic if you love pineapple.🍍

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional: A pinch of cinnamon or a squeeze of lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a medium saucepan, mix the chopped pineapple, sugar, and cornstarch. Add the water (or pineapple juice) and stir until combined.
  2. Cook the Mixture: Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a simmer, stirring frequently. Cook for 5-7 minutes until the pineapple softens and the mixture thickens.
  3. Add Flavor: Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract (and cinnamon or lemon juice, if desired).
